So recently I have decided to shift from working on my book to doing more short stories set in the same world as my book. I’ve chosen to do this for several reasons. First, it gives me a break from working on something so big. Ive been working on my book “Dear Mr. Avalon” for a few years now, and I’ve hit a bit of a wall. The current draft needs a lot of edits and it feels very overwhelming. So I’ve decided to shift to writing a few short stories set in the same world as the book to help with the struggle im facing.
Second, it helps me build the world out and explore the world I’ve created. I have a bunch of notes in a notebook but writing short stories helps me to apply those notes in a short form way that is more digestible and manageable that a novel.
And third, it gives me a way to display this world to people and gain feedback from readers as I develop my writing style, characters, and lore.
I’m happy to report that I’ve completed the rough outline for my first short story. It doesn’t have a title yet, but it is 5 pages long. It feels refreshing to be making tangible progress on a project im passionate about. Im hoping to keep up the momentum and start a rough draft this weekend. In the meantime, Thank you for stopping by.
